The travel season is in full swing judging from the number of empty desks in the office due to staff vacations. With that in mind, we recently asked our staff: What’s the coolest place you’ve ever visited?
The responses included exotic places across the globe. Read what some employees said below.
"The Himalayas when I was 12. Hiking the highest mountain range on the planet brings its own sense of joy."
Rajesh Raghunathan, financial analyst
"I don’t know if it is cool, but I sure loved it — Lone Pine, Calif. We stayed there when we climbed Mt. Whitney, and it’s just a throwback kinda town."
Laura Baldwin, senior consultant
"The 'coolest' place I've visited — literally — is Alaska. We went on a cruise of the Inside Passage; our land excursions were a great experience."
Phyllis Billington, corporate services specialist
"Watching the Aurora Borealis in Iceland was the coolest thing I have ever seen. It looks just like space opening up and descending onto Earth."
Lorraine Plant, corporate services specialist
"My family has fond memories of our vacation to Newport Beach, Calif., playing volleyball on the beach, riding bikes, and enjoying good eats. I’m sure we felt 'cooler' than we looked running around the busy beaches."
Dixon Davis, senior consultant
"I surfed growing up in Hawaii and have seen the inside tube of the Banzai Pipeline — not a lot of people have been there. The wave itself is powerful, but the real scary part is the jagged coral reef that sits about two feet below the surface of the water."
Allan Walker, director of publication services
"When I was in college, I had the great opportunity to study abroad with the Semester at Sea program. Our ship made stops in Russia, Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan, all within a two-month span. I have visited a lot of great places in my life, but that summer will always hold a special place in my heart!"
Andrew Maller, senior consultant
"I had the opportunity to spend a college semester studying in Valencia, Spain. To live in a place where you can walk to the train station, jump on a train, and get off in Paris or Florence was such an experience."
Kellie Wynne, senior director of corporate services
"I spent two years in Chile from age 19 to 21, serving as a missionary for my church and saw a lot in that wonderful country — everything from incredible people and very difficult political and economic conditions, including inflation that was running more than 1,000 percent a year and a military coup that deposed the elected president."
Derek Preece, executive consultant
"I have been fortunate to travel to some amazing places — Costa Rica, Italy, Peru, Mexico, Switzerland — but the most amazing probably has to be the Galápagos. Seeing all the different species of animals and amazing lava formations really makes you feel like you are stepping back in time."
Emily Peltier, senior director of product and business development
"The small towns in Italy (Siena, San Gimignano, Montecatini) where the history is rich, and I was with my family exploring!"
Christina Blamire, corporate services senior specialist
