Every year, BSM team members look forward to attending the annual American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) meeting. Not only is it a great chance to reconnect and engage with colleagues and industry experts; we’ve found it also provides a spark of inspiration through education and discovery.

This year’s meeting — which takes place Oct. 12-15 — is being held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Once there, BSM presenters will add to the lineup by providing valuable takeaways directly related to our areas of expertise. Below is a sample of topics BSM will cover at the meeting.

Business Transactions. To successfully navigate the opportunities provided by private equity (PE) — which continues to be a force in the ophthalmology market — one must be aware of current and emerging PE trends. Join BSM Founder Bruce Maller and his industry colleagues during a lively program focused on PE titled “Academy Café: Private Equity Panel Discussion.”
When: 1:30-2:45 p.m. Oct. 12      Where: Moscone South 10-12

Clinical Operations. When practice flow is out of sync, the rush to be timely can put excess stress on staff and doctors. In their presentation, “Conquering Patient Flow Problems,” BSM consultants Derek Preece and Elizabeth Cifers will discuss how to measure, analyze, and correct patient flow problems, enabling the practice to remain on schedule and run more smoothly.
When: 2-3 p.m. Oct. 13     Where: Moscone South 215

Financial Management. As reimbursement models change, practice owners are examining their current methods for the allocation of profits. Join BSM consultant Maureen Waddle at her “Shareholder Compensation Models” course, where attendees will learn about their options, followed by an exploration of case studies that demonstrate the challenges in creating a fair compensation system.
When: 3:15-4:15 p.m. Oct. 14     Where: Moscone South 208

Leadership Development. Great leaders do not just manage staff — they also inspire their team, helping them to reach new heights. In “Be a Better Leader: 3 Practical Steps to Lead Effectively,” BSM consultant Dixon Davis discusses three key elements of successful leaders. Each element is then put into practical application, teaching attendees how to become a more inspiring and effective leader.
When: 4:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 13    Where: Moscone South 212

Regulatory Compliance. Compliance is a nuanced topic that requires meticulous attention to detail by the practice. In their presentation, “The Audit Payoff: Common Findings to Fix,” BSM consultants and compliance experts Laurie K. Brown and Patricia Kennedy will cover common findings discovered in coding and documentation audits and how to use them to minimize future risk.
When: 4:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 14     Where: Moscone South 211

These are just a few of the areas in which BSM consultants will speak on from the podium. For additional opportunities to receive professional advice, explore the full BSM presentation schedule, complete with dates, times, locations, presenters, and topics.
