Billing for Medical Services During the Global Period

QUESTION: Are we able to bill diagnosis code 263.8 (other protein-calorie malnutrition) and V45.86 (bariatric surgery status) during the 90-day global period after LAP-BANDŽ surgery or is this considered part of the global period, therefore not billable?

ANSWER: Routine and additional medical services required of the surgeon during the postoperative period (like those indicated above), including complications which do not require additional trips to the operating room or hospitalization, are considered part of the global period.
